Multi-Objective Optimization of a High Specific Speed Centrifugal Volute Pump Using a 3D Inverse Design Coupled with CFD Simulations

Written by Prof. Mehrdad Zangeneh (ADT / University College of London), Luying Zhang (ADT) & Gabriel Davila (Franklin Electric)

What's inside?

This paper presents three different multi-objective optimization strategies for a high specific speed centrifugal volute pump design. This work was done as part of a collaboration with Franklin Electric. The objectives of the optimization consist of maximizing the efficiency and minimizing the cavitation while maintaining the Euler head.

In this publication, you will:

  1. Discover the optimization strategies to parametrize the blade geometry using a 3D inverse design method.
  2. Understand why the efficiency levels in the conventional optimization is generally lower than the inverse design based optimization.
  3. See the techniques to get an optimized geometry  which is 3.9% more efficient than the baseline with little cavitation at high flow.
