What's inside?

This paper looks at the Optimisation of a pump-as-turbine runner using a 3D inverse design methodology.  In this paper, we discuss how the baseline design is based on an existing runner designed with TURBOdesign1 by Zhu, that was then optimised by the genetic algorithm in Isight.
In the work presented here the baseline design will be further optimised by minimizing secondary flow and profile loss factors while keeping the same meridional profile, stacking characteristics and work distribution in pump mode.

Optimization of a Pump-as-turbine Runner

In this publication, you will:

  1. Learn how a multi-objective optimization design system that includes 3D Inverse Design is applied to a pump-turbine runner
  2. Understand the challenges of designing runners that operate as both a pump and a turbine
  3. Discover the correlation between input parameters and the resulting trade-offs
