What's inside?

This paper was presented at the ASME Turbo Expo 2023 and explores a novel design and optimisation strategy coupling the 3D inverse approach and DoE
(design of experiment) study that is developed.

CFD analysis confirmed that the redesigned compressor wheel has increased the efficiency over the entire performance map significantly, and the detailed internal flow visualisation shows that the reduction of leaking loss is the main contributor to this improvement.

A complete compressor map is obtained and compared with the baseline. The optimal design has a better efficiency across most part of the map, and the maximum pressure ratio is also slightly improved.

In this publication, you will:

  1. Discover how the 3D inverse approach is applied, combined with  DoE (design of experiment), to redesign a transonic centrifugal impeller.
  2. Understand how the redesigned transonic centrifugal impeller reduces leaking loss and shock strength through blade loading control.
  3. See how TURBOdesign Optima can optimise blade angles at the hub region, resulting in a more gradual tendency of increasing when looking from hub to shroud, which enhances overall stability.
